As teachers directly responsible for rehearsing the Year 4 students to take on the main roles in the concert, we found Ms Argyle-Cross’s composition of ‘The Magic Toyshop’ fantastic to work with. The story lines are straightforward yet engaging, with humour sprinkled appropriately in several places throughout. There are many different characters included in the plays which allows all Year 4 class members to take on a ‘leading’ role and therefore no one person is the ‘star’; this provides an excellent vehicle for team work and demonstrates the importance of everyone’s contribution in the production. The language is easy for the students to learn and, due to the many parts, no one role requires lengthy speeches to be memorised. The music is very suitable for children’s voices, with delightful melodies and ‘catchy’ phrases which our students really enjoyed singing. We were also grateful to Ms Argyle-Cross for writing additional songs to be included in her works which were suitable for the little girls in ELC to learn so they could be included in the concert production. It was a privilege to have been given the opportunity to present works by Ms Julie Argyle-Cross which showcase her talent for writing children’s musicals and we look forward to her further creative compositions.
