SYNOPSIS

Doctor Knowall is based on a Grimm’s fairy tale of the same name. It has been expanded to include extra characters and a substantial amount of chorus work.

Adam Crabb – a woodcutter – and his hard-working wife – Greta, long for a better life. They meet a Doctor who is wealthy, who can afford to buy good food and drink, and not work too hard. Adam thinks he would like to live well, and perhaps he could become a doctor too. He asks the doctor how he can achieve this. Having received the very simple advice, he returns home with his wife and does everything the doctor has suggested, including putting up a sign outside his house saying ‘Dr Knowall’.

In no time at all Adam gains quite a reputation for giving out remedies and solving problems. News of him travels to the castle, where the Lord has had all his gold stolen by thieves. He invites Adam to attend the big feast on the day of the church festival, and hopes that Adam will be able to identify the thieves for him.

As the courses of the meal are served, Adam nudges his wife and says ‘That’s one, that’s two, and so on. The thieves, however, think he is identifying them one by one! They take him outside and confess that they have stolen the money. They even show him where it is hidden. They will willingly return the gold if Adam does not reveal their identities. They will even give him a large sum of money.

Dr Knowall shows the Lord where the money is hidden and is paid a fine reward, as well as receiving money from the thieves. Adam Crabb is now a wealthy man – admired and renowned throughout the land. Everyone celebrates ‘The man of the moment – Dr Knowall’!

SETTING

A medieval German town

DURATION

Approx. 25 minutes

NOTE: There are two versions of this musical play; they are essentially the same except that this abridged version has fewer songs and less dialogue than the full version of Doctor Knowall.

SET

Three main areas

  • outside the inn (Songs 1 & 4)
  • outside Adam & Greta’s house (Song 2)
  • inside the castle (Songs 3, 5, 6 & 7)

This could be simply done, with lighting of different areas on the stage.

Set permanently on the side of the stage, preferably with microphones; the two Narrators with their words enlarged and on a stand.

COSTUMES

As simple or elaborate as you choose: tunics, skivvies and tights for the boys; skirts, tops and aprons for the girls. Accessories for certain characters such as the miller, the innkeeper etc. Something a little more elaborate for Lord Moneybags and Dr Sawbones.

USE OF TEACHING AND BACKING TRACKS

We recommend that during the rehearsal period the performers become less and less dependent on the teaching tracks, so that they are ready to perform the show with the backing tracks only.

The teaching tracks have all the individual vocal musical numbers provided, but do not include incidental music or reprises. As such, the teaching tracks cannot be used for a performance.

The backing tracks have all the musical numbers, plus incidental music, separately provided in order, allowing the tracks to be run through sequentially, with appropriate pauses for dialogue.
